The World of Women in Dance, conceived as an evening of discussion on issues of dance, was held recently with Padmini Chettur, Leela Samson, Malavika Sarukkai and Lakshmi Vishwanathan, at Kalakshetra.
Padmini Chettur, Leela Samson, Malavika Sarukkai and Lakshmi Vishwanathan gave a demonstration on specific issues surrounding dance today and also spoke about them.
The demonstrations covered a range of issues from simple historical narrative to the exploration of inner and outer spaces. Leela Samson explored the myriad identities of the dancer. Malavika Sarukkai investigated shifting perspectives in dance. Lakshmi Viswanathan dealt with the concept of feminine grace. Padmini Chettur presented her work 'Pushed'.
Following the demonstrations, the dancers interacted with the audience and responded to their questions. The World of Women in Dance was moderated by Sharada
Ramanathan.
The World of Women in Dance was a part of Explorations, a week of inaugural programmes to mark the Chennai launch of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) India. Explorations was organised by DakshinaChitra, NMWA India's museum partner in south India.
