'Maayaa Raavan', a dance theatre in English,
will be staged at the Music Academy on Saturday June 30, 2007,
by actress Shobana. She has produced and acted in the 90-minute
dance drama with English dialogues, which will help the viewer
understand the movements of classical Bharatanatyam better
wherein he/she can appreciate the subtle marriage between the
mudras and body movement.
The programme is in aid of the Society for
Development, Research & Training (SFDRT) which is primarily
involved with the children of sex workers, HIV-infected and
affected and children with AIDS.
The money raised will be used to improve and
train the children of sex workers, which includes minor girls.
Shyamala Ashok, who has a background of medical and psychiatric
social work, started SFDRT in 1996.
SFDRT works with poor women living on the
streets, exposed as street sex workers and their children in
particular, who are HIV-infected and affected, and with children
of AIDS. SFDRT also works with other interventions to prevent
HIV/AIDS, especially with migrant populations such as truckers
and cleaners. They also run a community care centre, having
infrastructure to treat HIV-positive patients.
Shobana said she was touched and moved to
tears on seeing and learning about the tremendous work done by
SFDRT for HIV/AIDS affected children. She felt sad that while
India was progressing rapidly, it was lagging behind in handling
critical issues like AIDS and HIV.
