Paintings of Hans Kaushik

V Hans Kaushik, a multi-talented and versatile artist, is well known in Chennai. Recently, there were a number of references to his acting talent in the national award winning film, 'Oorukku Nooru Peru'. One has also seen the intricate properties and abstract stage sets he has designed. Just last year, he figured as a director (in the hilarious Tamil comedy, 'Minnal Ravi'). He is also well known as one of the foremost stage actors in the city (the maniac in Accidental Death of an Anarchist; Dorine in Veshakkaran; the devil in Dr Faust).

However, it has been nine long years since he last treated Chennai to an exhibition of his paintings! It was in 1995 that the Alliance Francaise of Madras last hosted a successful exhibition of Hans' paintings and sculptures.

Hans graduated in fine arts (sculpture) from MS University, Baroda, in 1985. Since then, he has had two solo exhibitions, participated in two group exhibitions, acted in more than 30 plays and five films, among various other things (conducting workshops, training actors, designing props, sets, backdrops, directing plays, and, of course, being a founder-member of Magic Lantern!)

There are images and shapes that constantly play in the background of one's mind. They intrude in the form of smells and memories; often unbidden, they disturb the flow of one's life; change the texture of one's life flow as it were. These forms and shapes and colours and what-have-you are, in a sense, the precursors to shaped memory and have their roots in the unconscious, animal part of us that lives in the instinct. This is the part that woke up in us long before any other part of us. This is the part that makes us sing and dance and draw pictures on a wall from the time we realised we could do these things.

This exhibition is an attempt to look at some of these shapes that intrude and lurk in the corner of one's mind where you never realised anything existed. The images seem abstract in the sense that they do not seem to be recognisable forms. We simply do not recognise them because we have not seen them for a long time... like a long lost relative or friend! They are there doing things for us we never dreamed of.

Alliance Francaise of Madras and Magic Lantern present 'Another 9 years', a painting exhibition by Hans Kaushik from July 5-17 at the AFM gallery. The inauguration will take place at 6 p.m. July 5 (24, Old No 40, College Road, Chennai 600 00,6 ph: 2827 9803).
