Remind Her of King Canute!!

The much awaited General Council meeting of the AIADMK produced nothing unexpected. It has authorised Jayalalitha to hold alliance talks with other parties for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. This is a time honoured convention in all Dravidian parties.

The decision to establish camps for the young men and women was the only new announcement. This was also not totally unexpected. There has been a wide spread belief that the youth of Tamil Nadu are now behind Vijayakanth. The DMDK declared that it would specially work for the welfare of the youth.

This prompted the DMK to hold at Tirunelveli a separate Youth Conference, which attracted over five lakh young men and women form all over the State.

The AIADMK does not want to be left behind in the competition to woo the young voters, who form a sizable chunk in the total electorate. Hence the decision to form separate camps for them. It is to be seen how this is going to work and how far this would help the party to regain power. This step also is indicative of the party's desperate last ditch attempt to take the reigns of power again.

Tinge of haughtiness?

But her speech was authoritarian in character. She said , “No party in the State, whether it is an old party or a new party that is born yesterday, can do politics in the State without uttering my name. Out of the ten resolutions passed in the DMK MLAs' meet, nine mentioned me by name. They may be in power. We are not in power. But, they are afraid of us”. Any political analyst can assert that these words emanate from frustration and despair.. It has a tinge of arrogance, thoroughly unbecoming of a tall leader. It is high time someone reminded her of King Canute.
