It was July 15, 1979. Chaudhary Charan Singh withdrew from the Janata alliance. Morarji Desai was the Prime Minister. Many had suggested to him that there were 'ways' of staying on in power, with the help of other MPs. Morarji's reply was a firm 'NO'. "One should act in life according to truth and one's faith," these were the words that he uttered. Morarji Bhai not only left the Prime Ministerial post, but he also retired from politics at the age of 83 years.
They were the values of those days. Much water has flown under the bridge since then. The moment the Left announced withdrawal of their support, the Manmohan Singh Government should have announced the date for seeking the vote of confidence of the lower House. Not a moment should have been wasted. Dialogue with the Samajvadi party, dialogue with all the minor parties in parliament to 'muster' support for the continuation of this minority Government and many other latent and patent attempts to offset the threat that is real.
The Hon'be President had to invite the Prime Minister for a discussion on the 'current political situation.' Where is the need for a discussion, when what exists is well written on the wall in capital letters?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason.
