Hundred is indeed a landmark, more so in the history of a Railway Station. Chennai Egmore is 100.
The building is an architectural delight - a harmonious combination of Mogul, Gothic, Indo Sarcenic and renaissance styles. Robert ChisholmIt had designed the building. It is so huge that even a train at the platform looks puny. The then South Indian Raiway had said that it had given to Madras, a building of which the City could be proud. Its platform area is greater than that of Charing Cross Station in London.
It excites an admixture of emotions -s of joy, when you receive a dear one, of agony, when you are sending off your dear one., of satisfaction when you buy a worthy book, of contentment when you have dishes of your choice at the Railway Canteen, of recollection when you think of the first time you alighted at the Station on your maiden journey.
It is said that the great G D Naidu would travel by train whenever he wanted to read a good book. A train journey is more than a mere travel. It is the most romantic experience one can have upon the earth. And, Egmore is more than just a building. It is even more than a Gateway to Chennai. It has been a gateway to profitable careers for many. It has also proved to be the gateway to tragedies for many. Yet, it still stands full of life and hope.
Chennaionline wishes Egmore many more years of service to millions of travellers.
