About 7,000 police personnel will be deployed for security in
Chennai on September 15 and 23, in connection with Vinayaka
Chathurthi celebrations. Chennai Police Commissioner G Nanchil
Kumaran, addressing reporters in Chennai, denied that the measures
were being initiated in the wake of the recent bomb blasts in
Hyderabad.
"Security will be beefed up in the city especially on September
23, when the idols are taken in procession to be immersed in the
sea," Kumaran said.
As many as 30 routes have been identified for the procession and
six places, Foreshore Estate, Kasimedu fishing harbour, behind
Tiruvotiyur Popular weigh bridge, behind Universal Carborandum at
Tiruvotiyur, Palgalai Nagar at Neelankarai and Ennore Ramakrishna
Nagar, have been identified for the immersion of idols.
Various Hindu groups which display Vinayaka idols in Chennai and
later take them out in a procession have been given certain
instructions.
"We have instructed them to put men to keep vigil of the idols
round-the-clock. On the day of the procession, the height of the
idol, including the vehicle, from the road, should not exceed 10
feet," Kumaran said. Idols should be made only of clay and should
not use chemicals.
Kumaran himself will lead the security arrangements on both days.
Idols were placed at 1,086 locations in Chennai last year and will
be the same this time too, he said. (Agencies)
