Exhibition on German religious buildings Arts and Culture

After the exhibition 'Made in Germany - Architecture and Ecology', shown in Chennai at Dakshinchitra in 2005, the Goethe-Institut now presents as a second part of the series 'Made in Germany – Architecture + Religion'.

This exhibition analyses the recent development in religious buildings. The strange paradox is that: the last 10 years have seen a dramatic fall in the number of believers, yet, at the same time, the construction of the most amazing religious buildings for all confessions have been growing. 'Made in Germany – Architecture and Religion' presents nine of these recently-built, stunning sacral constructions.

Not only churches are shown within the exemplary construction projects, but also a funeral parlour, a crematorium and a synagogue. The design models, photographs and information are presented in pylons, which will be lighted from inside.

  • Funeral Parlor München, 2000

  • Double-Church for two denominations, Freiburg, 2002-2004·

  • Crematorium Baumschulenweg, Berlin, 1996·

  • Herz Jesu Church, München, 2000·

  • House of Silence, Meschede, 2001·

  • Parish Church St. Theodor, Köln, 2002·

  • Christus Pavillon, Hannover, 2000·

  • Chapel of Reconciliation, Berlin, 1996-2000·

  • Synagogue, Dresden, 2001

The nine examples show sites of inner calm and collective meditation, as well as the ways in which a younger generation of architects integrate artistic and metaphorical character in religious constructions.
