Every day we come across several paintings and art forms using
pencils, brushes, paints and watercolours. Art World, off
Cenotaph Road holds a unique painting exhibition.
The art works of French artist Olaf Van Cleef are exhibited. The
exhibition is on till February 2.
Even though Olaf Van Cleef was a French citizen, he was very
much inspired by the Indian tradition and art. He was also
interested in jewellery and appreciated Thanjavur paintings, on
which were studded actual gems like ruby, emerald and pearl.
Manob Tagore, one of Olaf Van Cleef’s friends
in India says with pride that all the paintings of the artist
are in India.
Although the paintings are made of water colours, the use of
Svarovski crystals and bits of chocolate wrappers make it very
unique. In fact, he found a greater joy by working with
Svarovski crystals, because he discovered a world of new
expressions by playing on prism of colours and the multitude of
shades that they offered.
Manob Tagore says that Olaf Van Cleef has special interest
towards the city of Kolkata, as a result of which, many of his
paintings depict the city in some form or the other.
Manob Tagore mentions that for a particular painting, the artist
spent around twelve hours for sticking the minute bits of
chocolate wrappers.
Mythological figures, birds, cows, elephants and the stick
figure, which represents his name, are some of the common
features found in his art work..
Paintings of Lord Vishnu, Lord Jagannath, Goddess Lakshmi,
Maharaja and Maharani are some of the exhibits.
