S Varuna, a student of class-2 of A M M School, had her art
exhibition inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Governor S S Barnala at the
Raj Bhavan recently.
She had the distinction of making her first stroke when she was
just over two years old. She is the recipient of the
International Peace and Co-operation School Award 2006 from
Spain for her drawing, titled 'For a Planet without Gender
Violence'.
At the age of 6, she has held two exhibitions, one was a
father-daughter duo show and the other a solo exhibition. The
solo exhibition was held on Children's Day, November 14, 2006.
Aksharaa Haasan and Subhulaxmi inaugurated the show by lighting
an artistic lamp. The show had mixed media works on various
subjects like landscapes, mother and child, Ganesha, boy and
girl, and abstract digital art. Recently, when her father Ap
Shreethar hosted a unique show on Ustad Zakir Hussain, she too
flaunted the abstract strokes of hers on ustadji. The tabla
maestro was greatly moved by her painting.
Her latest exhibition, 'Varuna - Hands on Peace', has 194
works of art representing 194 countries of the world. Right from
her first stroke, she indicated her passion for art. She slowly
inherited the mechanism of colour balancing from her father. Now
she has specialised in drawing abstract forms of Ganesha,
landscapes, mother and child, cartoon characters, faces with
different shapes and scenery. Her favourite artists are Picasso,
M F Hussain and Anjoli Ela Menon.
She handles any medium - acrylic, watercolours on board,
canvass, oil pastels, pencil and, recently, digital too. Her
strokes are fast with a good colour balance. Apart from
painting, she also engages herself in other forms of art like
clay modelling, sand art, tile painting, glitter art, tube
painting, digital art, Carnatic vocal and keyboard playing.
Presently, she is also learning ballet at the Russian Cultural
Centre.
She is an active participant in painting competitions. She is
a regular nominee of her school for inter-school competitions.
Her painting, titled 'Women', was published in a national
English daily.
