Adolescent crushes and infatuation that lead teens astray and
cause distress to their parents is narrated with a fair degree
of sensitivity in 'Kanna'.
The film centers on high schoolgirl Poorni, who, on an excursion
to a hill station develops a crush on Kanna, the local florist
and their guide. But it's after her return to school, and seeing
a couple of her friends missing class to meet their boy friends,
that kindles in Poorni a yearning to meet Kanna. Skipping
school, Poorni sets out to the hill station to meet the youth.
It's a journey that acquaints her with the harsh realities of
life, and it's seamy side. The script meanders here, some of the
girl's adventures a bit hard to digest.
The lush locales of the place
form eye-catching backdrops.
The director reveals a rare
insight in depicting the bonding that Poorni shares with her
family, particularly her father (Prakashraj). The family's
understanding, support and forgiveness of their daughter's
misdemeanour, and the way they handle her disappearance, are
scenes that are well handled.
Raja (who has acted in some
Telugu films like 'Anand'), debuts in Tamil. His good looks and
easy approach to his role, Sheela's rare maturity in handling
hers, and the freshness of their pairing contributes to the
film's appeal. Seasoned actors Prakashraj and Sita provide
strong support.
'Kanna' is an earnest attempt
to give a clean, wholesome, entertainer with a message relevant
to adolescents and their parents.
