Y Gee Mahendra's sitcom TV

When Doordarshan began beaming TV programmes, his was the first play to be telecast on August 15, 1975.

Now, when Kalaignar TV has been launched, in 2007, he has joined the bandwagon. That speaks volumes for the staying power of drama artiste, director, percussionist and actor Y Gee Mahendra.

'Sakala Kala Bhavan', a sitcom, is to be aired Thursdays 10 p.m. on Kalaignar TV.

The story is spun around around nine characters, the inmates of 'Sakala Kala Bhavan', a lodge owned by Meenakshi. Each tries to take over the reins of the lodge, leading to hilarious situations.

The cooks, Palghat Chellappa and Nayudupet Narsamma, and a distant relative Thappu Dharmarajan, join the team to make the episodes more colourful and humorous.

Directed by Y Gee Mahendra, the cast includes Nithya, Manorama, Sachu, CID Sakuntala, Y Gee Mahendra, ARS, Kovai Anuradha, Kathadi Ramamurthy and Typist Gopu.

According to Mahendra, the serial has been so written that there would be one VIP in each episode. The opening episode saw the entry of Manorama to make the situation more hilarious.

"There will be a lot of other VIPs also taking part in the serial," he adds.

Since the serial would be aired only once a week, each episode would be a different story, he explains. "There would be many common characters so that there is also some continuity," says Mahendra who has acted in about 300 movies.

Dialogue, the mainstay of a sitcom, is by Kovai Anuradha. "There is good, healthy humour. But if you have watched all my plays, you can expect that there will be a message at the end of the episode," he says.

One thing is for sure. Thursday nights will never be the same again.
