In
the abode of Lord Shiva and Parvathi - Kailash - the divine were
blessing mankind with peace, prosperity and happiness. Goddess
Parvathi, also called Ambika, decided to shower her bountiful grace
on human beings by enacting a drama - Thiruvilayaadal.
She closed the eyes of Shiva, as a result the
universe was engulfed in total darkness. The Devas and other
celestial beings flocked to Kailash. At this juncture, Shiva gave
asylum to them and opened his third eye - Netri Kan, dispelling
darkness and bathing the area in brightness.
The Goddess, as Pachai Amman, prostrated at the
feet of Shiva, who knew of her divine design, to establish peace and
harmony in the world. Since she was responsible for drowning the
world in darkness Lord Shiva considered it a sin.
He wanted Ambika to atone for her sin and ordered
her to proceed to the world.
She appeared in many spots which became holy by
her presence .The Goddess appeared in the holy town of Kashi and
spread the Vedas and Shastras. She appeared in the holy spot of
Thirumullaivaayal and also in the hallowed shrine of Mangadu.
Ambika also went to Kanchi and did penance under
a mango tree propitiating Lord Shiva. At Sengodu, near
Tiruvannamalai, she observed strict penance standing on a needle.
After her avatars she merged with the Lord and was called
Ardhanareeswari.
The
Goddess was victorious in all her endeavours. Since she appeared as
Pachai Amman in Thirumullaivaayal, she became the presiding there.
She was successful in establishing peace and prosperity in this
world. She is called the goddess of marriage as she blesses those
awaiting marriage to enter into wedlock.
There is a tall statue of Ayyanar housed in this
temple which is an added attraction. A holy tank near the temple is
said to possess medicinal properties. Devotees surge to have a
rendezvous with the Goddess on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The temple is situated five minutes from the
famous Vaishnavi Devi temple in Tirumullaivaayal, near Ambattur, in
north Chennai.
