The
divine wedding of Bakthavatsala Perumal with Kannamangai Nayaki was
witnessed by Devas at this hallowed spot. Not satisfied with
witnessing the marriage they wanted to stay here eternally to
worship the Lord in this thirukolam. What did they do?
They took the form of bees and created a beehive
so that they could stay here and propitiate him daily. There is a
beehive in the sanctum sanctorum of the Goddess with thousands of
bees swarming it. No one knows from when it has been there. The bees
do not sting the devotees who visit the temple to worship the Lord.
There is an interesting story related to Chandran,
one of the nine planets – Navagrahas. Chandran had an illegitimate
relationship with his guru’s wife, Tara. Budhan (another planet) was
born out of this relationship. The Devas were angry with Chandran
for his behaviour and cursed him. Thus, Chandran lost all his powers
and effulgence.
In order to regain his powers, he prayed to
Brahma to guide him.
Brahma asked Chandran to proceed to Darshana
Pushkarani, in Thirukannamangai, and have a holy dip so that he
could be redeemed of the curse.
Chandran came here and a darshan of the Darshana
Pushkarani. Lo and behold! Even before he had a holy dip, just by
having a darshan of the pushkarani, he was redeemed of his curse and
regained all his powers. Thus, the sanctity and power of the
pushkarani was established.
The Thirukannamangai temple calendar is packed
with festivals and spiritual activities. Jeshtabishekam is done in
the Tamil month of Aadi with piety.
