It was in an emotionally charged atmosphere that
the VCD on the
Danvantri
temple, Walajapet, was released on Sunday, September 16, 2007,
at Bharat Kalachar, T Nagar, Chennai.
The VCD, produced by Dr S V Ramanan of Jaishree
Pictures, Chennai, talks about the greatness of the only temple in
India that is dedicated to Lord Danvantri, the God of Medicine, at
Walajapet, in Vellore district.
The temple, constructed by Danvantri Arogya Peedam, Walajapet,
came up on the inspiration of one man – Sri Muralidhara Swamigal. He
spoke movingly about how his mother had taken a promise from him
while she was dying of cancer that he would do something to save the
world from such horrible diseases. His only recourse was to build a
temple for the God of Medicine, he said. He turned emotional when he
said he looked upon Mrs Y G Parthasarathy as his mother as he had
lost his to cancer.
The swamigal also spoke about the hard work that had gone into
the construction of the temple and how mantras written by devotees
have been buried as yantras in the temple, under each deity.
Dr (Mrs) Y G Parthasarathy, dean and director of PSBB Group of
Schools, Chennai, and chairman of Bharat Kalachar, who released the
VCD, said it was faith that made this world go round. She pointed to
her daughter-in-law Sudha Mahendra, sitting on the dais along with
her, and said she had a near-death accident and that it was Lord
Danvantri who restored her back to health.
Her son Y Gee Mahendra, actor, director, writer and secretary of
Bharat Kalachar, who claimed he was not a strong devotee, reiterated
this and said it was Sudha’s sheer faith in the Lord that had saved
her and brought her back to life. Sudha could be seen wiping off a
tear or two at the end of his speech.
Dr Mohan Rajan, medical director, Rajan Eye Care Hospital,
Chennai, who received the VCD, declared emphatically that doctors do
not believe that it was they who cured people. “It is God working
through us,” he said to cheers from the audience. He also stressed
the need for faith – be it in the doctor or God.
Dr M A Venkatakrishnan, a Sanskrit scholar, harped on this and
said it was wonderful that a doctor could express so much faith in
God. He praised Mrs Y G P for her dedicated learning, which made her
get a Ph. D degree after she had turned 70.
Ramanan, who compered the show neatly, said he was happy to have
done the documentary ‘The God of Health and Wealth’. The film
lucidly describes in detail why the temple was constructed, how it
was constructed, what are its salient features and what are the
deities one can find there.
