Konthangi is a village located 50 kms from Chennai. If one has to go to the village, he has to alight at Guduvancheri and travel 10 kms east. Bus route no : 55 C starts from Tambaram to this village. In this village is the Sri Thirukuliswarar temple.
Lord Siva has taken different forms and is omnipresent. This temple was constructed by the Chola kings for
Lord Siva.
This temple was not maintained well for a long time. The Vijayanagar kings then rebuilt the whole temple, old stone inscriptions say. Today people of the village light lamps and worship the god here. The temple is in a serene environment. Daily poojas are being performed twice a day (morning and evening) to the Lord.
People in the village say that the temple is far from Chennai, and therefore it has not got famous. There is a lake above the temple. The water from the lake is used for irrigation.
Those who seek peace can visit this temple. The name of the lord Thirukuliswarar is found in the stone inscriptions in the temple.
Another stone inscription states that in the olden days traders from the Nelikuppam village provided oil for the temple by collecting a tax. Idols of the lord were buried in the sand, at the time of the Mughals' invasion. One year back, the youth of this village took up cleaning of the temple. The villagers found a cave- like structure in the eastern side of the temple.
Suprised by this, they opened the cave and to their fascination and joy, found many idols of the god and goddess. People of the village thought that instead of building a new temple, they could renovate the existing temple. Meanwhile, 'Sivasramam', a voluntary organisation, decided to help in renovation of the temple.
The renovation work was started on December 10, 2003. Kancheepuram district Collector Rajaram was present on the occasion. The temple is being constructed as per the Agama sastras with sanctum sanctorum, the vimanams, arthamantapam, maha mantapam, sanctum for
Lord Nataraja, Lord
Vinayaka, goddess Sivagama Sundari and goddess
Thiripurasundari.
The bronze idols unearthed in the temple include that of
Lord Siva,
Lord Nataraja, goddess Sivagama Sundari and goddess Thiripurasundari. People of this village believe that the Lord takes part in all their day-to-day activities.
