Chocolet

Director: A Venkatesh
Cast: Prashant, Jaya Ray, Mumtaz, Livingston, and Suhasini, Charlie, Damu

It has a no-holds-barred first half. With the college campus as the backdrop, and obviously targeted at the college-crowd, it is quite blatant in it's display of body show, it's unashamed use of suggestive lines, and it's depiction of incidents at the campus and the girls hostel. The director attempts to give a 'family touch' to the second part by moving his scenes to the family arena.

It's love at first sight for Arvind (Prashant) when he sets eyes on Anjali (Jaya). Anjali finally reciprocates with a little help from Arvind's friend Jayachandran, a cop (Livingston). Jayachandran is a lonely man, estranged from his wife Sharada (Suhasini), their only daughter preferring to live in the hostel. Arvind decides to settle the turmoil in the cop's life. For, the daughter turns out to be Anjali, her stubborn mother now determined to get her married to a foreign-based engineer. Emotionally blackmailed, Arvind withdraws from the scene; Sharada's scheming almost leading him to his death. Not to worry, for Arvind at death's door recovers almost miraculously, thanks to the chant of the Ganesha-procession passing by.

As the boisterous college-student with his dances and fights, and later as the loyal friend who succumbs to emotional blackmail to save his friend's marriage. Prashant brings in the transition commendably. Debutant Jaya Ray (a former Ms. Goa) shows promise. A confused characterisation results in Suhasini's performance not hitting the mark. There's 'two much' of Mumtaz here, providing a real treat for her fans. For, the screen sizzler whether she's playing a college student or a rustic (a cameo thrust into the narration), comes down to the basics soon enough!
