Mutham

Director: S.A. Chandrasekhar
Cast: Arun, Charulatha, Nagendra Prasad, Jennifer, Ajayan, Anjali, Sathyan, Thalaivasal Vijay.

Supported by their five friends, the two lovers elope, tie the knot, and to escape the wrath of the girl's influential father, the gang zoom off, and take refuge in a deserted holiday resort. Not realising that death awaits them there. And as one by one is killed by the axe-and-knife-wielding mysterious killer, it's left to the surviving hero and his girl friend to expose the killer and save their own lives.

If his earlier film 'Dosth' was a bad rehash of 'Double Jeopardy', this time the director has borrowed liberally from 'Friday the 13th'. Similar locations, same style of killings and weapons used, and even a similar motive. A mentally deranged parent's misplaced vendetta. But unfortunately, the director is not able to create the same eerie ambience, the sudden jolt each killing provided, and the surprise element when the killer is exposed.

The cast of Arun, Charulatha, Anjali and Ajayan have done their parts well. The director has brought out well the intimacy between the lovers, the scenes of physical closeness not leaving a sour taste in the mouth like some other films. Scenes of Sathyan's tryst, with the maid, could have been toned down though.

Hindi film-makers too have borrowed liberally from Hollywood films, and in fact some of the recent successes in Bollywood have been these 'inspired' versions ('Raaz', 'Ajnabi', 'Humraaz' etc.). But while they've borrowed the main plot, they've worked on the script and added their own interesting touches. But Chandrasekhar has not been able to do that, with both his inspirations turning out to be just bad copies.
