Kadhal Konden
Director: Selvaraghavan
Cast: Dhanush, Sonia, Sudip, Nagesh, Srikant, Rambo Rajkumar
It's a performance one wouldn't have seen in recent times in Tamil cinema. Especially from the one-film old Dhanush, an unlikely hero. Dhanush the gawky high-school student of 'Thulluvatho Ilamai', has metamorphosised into this complex and obsessed lover in 'Kadhal Konden', with an excellent performance, his sheer body language a delight to watch, as he traverses through the complexities of his role.
Dhanush plays Vinod a college fresher, a genius in some ways, but whose strange behaviour and habits make him an object of ridicule for the rest of the class. But the sympathetic Divya takes him under her wings, and attempts to transform him into a socially accepted person. But she hadn't reckoned with the dark side of him, which surfaces, when she confesses to him her love for classmate Aathi. Battling with the demons inside him, Vinod takes her on a journey that is both chilling and nightmarish.

Debutant director Selvaraghavan (brother of Dhanush), begins his narration promisingly, moves into the second half a little hesitantly, but gets his grip back, and steers his story to a fitting finale. No doubt there are flaws in the script, but the director has managed to keep the audience hooked throughout. He's also extracted good work from his technical crew; from cinematographer Arvind Krishna and music composer Yuvan Shanker Raja.
Pretty Sonia (her first Tamil film) projects the necessary softness for the role. Sudip, after a hesitant start blends in well as Aathi, while Nagesh's expressions are a visual treat.
The film-maker willing to experiment with lesser explored subjects needs to be commended for taking 'the road not taken', and for his efforts to give a different fare to the audience. 'Kadhal Konden' is an engaging entertainer, worth a
watch.
