Allauddin

A Prabhu Deva movie has been released after a long gap, and without any hype around it. He gets a role in which he can fit in easily. That of the slum guy, the golden-hearted Allauddin, an orphan who fights against the injustice meted out to his people. The director here has tried to weave in some socially relevant issues too. Allauddin's main enemy is the wily, powerful Gangadhar (Raghuvaran in his elements). The hero gets his chance to be one-up on his tormentor when he finds some incriminating evidence -a bloody knife and a sliced finger- linking him to a murder. The latter becomes his golden goose, his magic lamp, which does his every bidding.

There's the love angle where the hero falls for Gangadhar's employee's daughter (a passable Ashima, the Punjabi lass in her second release), and vice versa. Gangadhar plans his final move, traps Allauddin, and shoots him down at point-blank range, only to realise the enormity of his blunder. A twist here, and a compromised ending.

'Allauddin' has been a long time in the making, the print looks a bit jaded, and one begins viewing it without any expectations. But surprisingly, the film turns out to be a not-so-bad one after all, even fairly engaging at times. There's a sincerity with which the debutant director (apprenticed with directors Manivannan, Tirupathisamy, Dharani) has dealt with his subject, a simplicity in his narrative style. However, some of the scenes appear to have been targeted at the little ones in the audience.
