Unnai Charanadainthein
Director: Samuthiraikani
Cast: Venkat Prabhu ,S.P.Charan,Meera,Vasudevan,Santoshi,Ilavarasu,Riyaz Khan.
A neatly crafted screenplay with some engaging situations, catchy lines, well etched characters, sensitive treatment and some fine performances, all make debutant director Samuthiraikani's maiden directorial effort 'Unnai Charanadainthein' worth watching. From the small screen (director of the TV serial 'Anni') to the big one, the director reveals a firm grip on the medium. It's the first production venture of SP Charan who also plays one of the leads and the director-producer duo have given a quality product.
It centers round three main characters, their changing relationships, friendship and love, possessiveness and jealousy, emotional blackmail and trust betrayed. It's about Kanna the simple innocent rustic, and Nanda the smarter savvier one,who share a great bond since childhood. Kanna is utterly devoted to Nanda, trusting him implicitly, happy to let him have the upper hand. Nanda shifts to the city for a job, followed soon by Kanna. And it's here the problem begins. If Nanda is irked by Kanna's innocent overtures and bonhomie with the neighbours who take him to their heart, pretty wealthy Bobby's wooing the simple rustic ignites jealousy in Nanda's heart. A possessive Nanda tries to thwart the relationship even taking recourse to some extreme measures. And while Kanna is oblivious of his friend's scheming,Bobby catches on to it,and it's a battle of wits between Nanda and Bobby to win Kanna's trust and love. Every scene has been planned with precision, humor and pathos realistically weaved into the story.
Venkat Prabhu (son of director-music composer Gangai Amaran) has acted in some cameos and character roles earlier, and gets his first lead role here. The amazing way he's handled his role, the spontaneous, and variety of his expressions, the naked emotions he reflects on his face, and his splendid body language, all show promise of an actor who can deliver if given the right role. Kanna under him turns out to be an endearing character who touches off a chord in you.
As the silent scheming Nanda ,SP Charan is the perfect foil, turning out an appreciably subtle low key performance .Meera Vasudevan (model, and heroine of Hindi 'Rules Pyar Ka ,super hit formula') has the ability to emote,a charming demeanour and extreme confidence before the camera .Santoshi who holds a torch for Nanda, and Ilavarasu as her father provide adequate support. Concentrating on the plot and the content, avoiding unnecessary gloss and humour, the songs (composed by SPB) and dances take a back seat.
The concept of the 'good-looking hero' seems to have undergone a drastic change and a new trend seems to be emerging,if some of the recently released films are any indication. It's how well the actor suits the role and how ably he projects the demands of the character that matters. If earlier it was Dhanush the unlikely hero as Vinod of 'Kadhal Kondein' who found acceptance,it's now Venkat Prabhu yet another unlikely hero who endears himself to the audience with his excellent portrayal.
