Aalukkoru Aasai

Director: V.Sekhar
Cast: Satyaraj,Meena,Manthara,Vadivelu,Kalpana,Senthil,Vadivukkarisi

He dreams of marrying an educated employed girl, of building a dream house of his own,and having just one child. But the wife he gets, thanks to the trick played by his scheming orthodox grandparents, turns out to be an illiterate rustic who's dreams are confined to marrying a swarthy man, having a dozen kids and visiting all the temples around.
With these two protagonists at cross purposes, it looked like director V.sekhar had the potential plot to build up on his story-line and to justify his title. But it doesn't quite turn out that way!

After the initial promise, the script soon loses focus, the issues get muddled, and the dreams and desires of the characters take a back seat. Straying away from his plot, the director introduces the character of a hooker (Manthara) who develops a soft corner for the hero. A slimmer manthara does look good, but the character sticks out like a sore thumb, doesn't move the script in the right direction, and only tends to distract, with quite a few frames in song-dance numbers wasted on her.

The comedy track of Vadivelu hoodwinking his own wife (a loud Kalpana) and carrying on unabashedly with his philandering activities is pedestrian comedy. From Satyaraj it's the same style of performance we've seen earlier, the script giving him no chance to turn out anything different. Meena too does what she's expected to, that is goes overboard playing the simple rustic belle, the way one would expect a simple garrulous rustic belle to be in Tamil films. Focussing on the middle class and issues related to them, and depicting the situations and dialogues realistically was once the director's forte. But in his recent releases, the director seems to have lost focus, exhausted all his issues, his recent films are a pale imitation of his earlier ones.
