Naam

Director: Sabha Kailash
Cast: Prakashraj, Jaivarma, Sunder, Mukesh, Vinod, Rashmi, Kalabhavan Mani.

Prakashraj, the two time National award winning actor comes out with his second home production 'Naam'. And like his earlier one 'Daya', this too is different from the routine films we get to see. A thriller, it's worth a watch, for it's novel script and treatment, the twist in the story, and the freshness of the lead players.

Prakashraj himself plays Irfan Khan a dreaded terrorist with a huge reward on his head, and all set to flee the country. For the actor, it's a role right up his sleeve, and one which he plays with elan. Commendable is the disguise he appears in to hoodwink the cops.

Irfan plans to hijack a plane carrying a minister, to Khatmandu. And while his associate throws a red herring, Irfan plans to leave the plane in disguise with the other passengers. But his plans go haywire when four unemployed, frustrated youths decide to turn kidnappers themselves and claim the reward money. The cat and mouse game the terrorist and the novices-in-kidnapping play leads to some humour. The background to the youths, and the build-up to the hijacking, is well handled. Appreciable is the twist during the hijack drama.

The film (a remake of the Telugu 'Ayithe') has five fresh faces namely Jaivarma (brother of 'Disco' Shanti), Vinod, Sunder, Mukesh, Rashmi (daughter of actress Jaya Murali), all of whom appear natural before the camera. Sticking out like a sore thumb is Kalabhavan Mani who plays the investigating cop. Mani begins well, sober and serious. But as the film progresses, one sees a change for the worse in his performance, with Mani taking recourse to the street-side style of performance he is famous for, going overboard with his mannerisms and playing to the gallery.
