Bhishmar
Director: Ranjit
Cast: Ranjit,Devayani,Ilavarasu,Rami Reddy, Anu Mohan.
Beginning his career as a hero, Ranjit was soon into doing character roles like in 'Marumalarchi' where he was pitted against the awesome talent of Mammootty, but he held his own. Then one saw him lesser and lesser in films, till he re-surfaced in his new avatar as a writer-director .'Bhishmar' which he scripts and directs and plays the lead in,is also his home production, produced by his actress wife Priya Raman.
The role of the upright, gutsy cop Bhishmar is given life to under the able portrayal of Ranjit. In fact one can say that it's a one man show and as the narration progresses, this becomes more and more evident. Only, being the producer, director and hero seems to sit a bit heavily on him,as he tries,at times unsuccessfully, to balance all the three! But taking into consideration that this is a first effort, the film does show promise.
It's about Bhishmar, the new cop in the block, honest and upright. An eye-sore to his corrupt juniors and his own senior who's hand in glove with an unscrupulous politician. Bhishmar has to fight a lone frustrating battle. He soon finds his personal life a mess, framed on false charges, tortured and suspended from his job. Bhishmar is finally exonerated (a little too quick, this) and one thought that with his job back,he would plan his next strategy and tie up the loose ends. But the director is clearly in a dilemma as to how to depict the next scenes and the ending. So a lot of frames are wasted in going for all those innumerable close-ups as Bhishmar expresses his frustration and moans over his loss. The 'actor' clearly overtakes the 'director' here! And there's the long drawn out scene where Bhishmar is shown destroying his tormentors, only to be told that it was all in his imagination! So there's the other ending ,not quite an optimistic one!
An innocent village belle has to be portrayed as a bit of a nitwit in our films, and Devayani as the cop's innocent wife plays the role, till of course crises strikes and then the character suddenly becomes a mature wise one! Adequate support is provided by Ilavarasu as the corrupt junior cop and Anumohan as the supporting one.
