Guru Peyarchi - 23 July 2003 - (The transition of Jupiter from Cancer to Leo)
Guru Peyarchi

The position of planets and the planetary transitions greatly influence our lives. When the planetary positions are not favourable, the individuals face adverse situations, problems and calamities in life. Transition of planets from one Rasi to another affects the affairs of our life positively or negatively.

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It is 48 million miles away from the Sun. Jupiter is housed in a Rasi for one year. So it takes 12 years for Jupiter to visit a Rasi again. Among the Navagrahas, Jupiter is known as the Guru Baghavan. He is a rishi, and the son of Saint Angirasa. He is also a minister of Lord Indra and a tutor of Adhidevas. He is the one who showers 'Kubera Yogam'. The Rasis, which will have positive effects from this transit, are Mesham, Katakam, Thulam, Dhanus, and Kumbham and the Rasis, which will get negative effects, are Rishabam, Mithunam, Viruchigam, Kanni, Simmam, Makaram, Meenam.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at 1827 hrs, Guru Baghavan (Jupiter) moves from Katagam (Cancer) to Simmam (Leo) and enters the 1st quarter of the star Maham. On this day, we can worship Jupiter or Lord Dhakshinamoorthy, who is said to be the 'Tutor of Tutors'. It is believed that both can provide benefits. At Sri Abathsagayeswarar Temple, Alangudi, Guru Bhagavan showers His blessings as Lord Dhakshinamoorthy. Here are some stories about Alangudi.

The Four Sages

Sanakar, Sanadhanar, Sanathkumarar and Sanandhanar were four sages, well-versed in the Vedas. Even though they were accomplished in everything, they felt a void in them - they wished to obtain 'Meignanam'. They searched for a tutor (Guru), and found none qualified enough. They concluded that Lord Shiva is the ultimate choice. They started meditating towards Lord Shiva, who appeared before them and agreed to preach them.

Lord Shiva sat under a banyan tree (Aalamaram), facing South, showing 'chinmuthirai' and preached to them about 'Meignanam' at this place. Since then, this place came to be known as Alangudi. We can generally see in all Shiva temples, Lord Shiva as Dhakshinamoorthy, with the four sages seated at his feet as students.

A Lotus Child

At Alangudi, there lived a Brahmin by name Mahamathi. He lived a peaceful life. Even though he led a great life, he was disappointed on one score -- that he was issueless. One fine morning, Mahamathi bathed in Amirthapushkarni and plucked lotus flowers to perform prayers to Lord Shiva. Suddenly, he was thrilled to see a beautiful female baby lying on a lotus flower. The baby was smiling at him. Mahamathi immediately decided to foster the child, and took her away with him. He and his wife brought her up with care and love, and she grew up to be a beautiful girl. Her parents started looking out for a suitable bridegroom. Refusing all the proposals, she started meditating on a Lingam, which was created by her. She prayed to Lord Shiva to accept her. This girl was none other than Parvathi Devi. Lord Shiva married Parvathi Devi here, and during the ceremony, Parvathi Devi who was in a joyful mood, expressed her wish to stay at Alangudi itself. And it accordingly happened.

Here comes the story behind Parvathi Devi's arrival in Alangudi as a child. One day, Parvathi Devi was playing with the Sapthakannigai at Kailash. Pirani, one of the Sapthakannigai brought a flower bunch, and threw it towards Parvathi Devi in jest. They were playing with joy. Suddenly, Vaishnavi, another member of the Sapthakannigai threw the bunch to Parvathi Devi from a height. On seeing this, Parvathi raised her hands to catch the bunch. Surya Bhagavan (Sun) misinterpreted the gesture and thought that Parvathi Devi wanted him to stop. He then became stationary.

With the Sun suspending his work, darkness blanketed everywhere. Lord Shiva, in a fit of anger at Parvathi's action, ordered her to live in Alangudi for a specified time period. This is how Mahamathi found the baby girl in the lotus flower.
