If someone tells you to plant trees according to your birth star to be healthy and happy, I’m sure you will give an odd look to judge the sanity of that person. However, don’t come to a hasty conclusion yet. Krishnamurthy, a civil contractor-turned horticulturist, gives enough reasons to prove his points.
“There are 12 rasis, 9 grahams, 8 directions. How do these influence the life of an individual? There are lakhs of shrubs and plants in India. But our ancestors have referred to only 27 trees that relate to the 27 stars. They have chosen these trees because the character of the trees and the individual go together. The characteristics that are ascribed to the trees can be found in the individual.
He agrees that there is no authentic source to prove what he says. “It’s difficult to believe this in the beginning. Whether they accept it or not is a personal matter. The educated are skeptical. But when they understand the reason, I’m sure they will help promote the concept of green belt. When you go to the library, you will get the botanical names of many plants and trees but you will not know the medicinal and healing qualities of these plants. I’m interested in promoting that. I’ve been researching it for the past three years.”
While giving an example to prove this, he explains the characteristics of those who have Poosam as their birth star. “The tree that should be planted by this person is ‘paraasu’. It's called the Flame of the Forest. The leaves of this particular tree resemble that of the vilvam tree. These people have the capacity to guide others. Wherever they go, they will shine as leaders. They will prove their individual identity.”
“Chennai has thoongu moonji maram (rain tree) aplenty and yet it’s the state capital that gets the minimum centimetres of rain every season. The lack of rain in Tamil Nadu these days is because the rare species of trees that are capable of bringing rain are extinct now. Only 10 out of the 27 trees that could bring rain are alive. If I tell people to plant a tree, people won’t do it. If I connect it with astrology and health-related issues, they are willing to listen to me. This is a way of increasing their awareness.”
Why was he interested in something that was non-profiting? “It’s a group activity. We hear so much about global warming. We need to do something about this. I want to create a green belt. I want to make people sensitive about environmental issues. These special species of trees have the capacity to control nature. For example, we know that in the December tsunami, only the Tiruchendur temple has not been affected. In spite of being near the sea, it stands majestic. This is because the sthala vriksham of this temple is kadamba maram. You can see those trees in and around the temple in plenty.”
It’s true all of us would like to plant a tree and be a part of the green environment. But living in a city and amidst mushrooming apartments, where are we to find the space for a tree? He has a solution: “You could plant them in temples, schools, and other public places. Also, if industries and factories take up this issue, the result will be miraculous.”
What are the occasions for planting these trees? “When we have family functions like marriage, birthday and wedding celebrations, we can celebrate them by planting trees. This will give us the satisfaction that since we are planting a sapling to please our birth star, only good things are going to happen in our lives. It will also give us the satisfaction that we are doing something good to the public. Nowadays, because of want of space, we cut trees while constructing new buildings. We don’t feel any qualms while cutting the trees. But you will become possessive of them when you plant them for astrological purposes. There are vibrations from these trees that suit the constitution of the body and bring positive changes. Not all will accept this concept. It’s very difficult to believe something without scientific proof. If two among the 10 who hear this follow what I say, my aim is achieved.”
This an open call to all those who are conscious of the environment. This is an invitation to create a green belt around the globe. Aren’t you interested? Don’t you want to contribute your part in creating a better earth for our progeny to live in? You must be checking your diary for the next function at home now!
