Dr. Rudran (Dr.): They don't have many opportunities to move in the right direction. The pressures on them are numerous. Even children are to struggle against pressures. Like, 'you have to score these many marks to choose this course'. This pressure on the childhood turns into disappointment at a particular point of time. Then it takes the shape of anger. This anger may take him to productive and creative avenues or lead him to his fall. The younger generation today suffers from undue external and sociological pressures. A tenth standard girl was brought to me. Her parents complained that she was not scoring good marks and wanted me to counsel her. I spoke to her. During the counselling session, when the parents were not present, she confided in me a shocking fact. Her interest in dancing was more than that of her interest for studies. Her parents did not give her the opportunity to pursue her interest. She found a hotel close to Anna Salai, Chennai, that provided her the opportunity. She used to wear her uniform when she left for school everyday. She would carry another set of dress in her schoolbag; change her dress in the room provided by the hotel and would get into the disco halls and dance to her heart's content till the evening. And in the evening, she would again change to her uniform and return home. Her parents were not aware of this. The thing is the hotel does not charge the usual fee from ladies and in addition they offer beer, free of cost. In this case, it was not a lady; but a mere girl - I would say child - who was not matured enough to choose between right and wrong. She pursued her interests and someone else exploited it. Such forces acting on young minds would complicate the conditions of the days to come.
Confusions are deliberately being built into the young minds; forced on them. I don't know what can be done to stop this. COL: There is another noticeable change in the boys and girls of these days. They freely touch each other while they converse. This was not possible about twenty years ago. Will tactual relationship lead to undesirable consequences? Dr.R: It depends. Touching or shaking hands would never mean an invitation to the bed. If the persons involved are clear, nothing goes wrong. If they are fools, it will necessarily lead to complications. COL: There are a lot of people who go blindly behind so-called spiritual gurus. What makes them do this? Dr.R: Laziness and lack of the drive to work. This is in no way different from buying lottery tickets. Man is tossed between problems and desires. I need a house; a car; I have to give my daughter in marriage. But I don't have a penny left with me. I don't know what to do. Where else can I go? I resort to God to give me everything. But He is not to be seen anywhere. Then I come across this person. He says that he is in direct touch with God. I get a feeling that this man may perhaps make a representation to Him on my behalf! I am not able to meet the Collector. I am bribing the peon to meet him. When I am not able to see God, I go behind pseudo saints.
Dr.R: There is not much difference between the strength of will and the strength of teak. The strength of teak is proved by the furniture that is made out of it. The strength of mind is proved by the will to live. One who is unable to live is weak of mind. One who is determined to live - for good or bad - is strong. One's ability, personality and more importantly environment all go into the fabric. COL: How do you think that we can pull the society out of the morass? Dr.R: If I am speaking to you now and if I keep writing books, it is for my happiness. Nobody can bring about a change in another person's attitude. Only the individual decides his or her course - whether to take the shape of a philosopher or a scoundrel. Unless the individual has the will to change, nothing can be done.
