A Blossoming Bud - Srikanth

Chennai Citizen

As soon as we enter the small and compact house, we are welcomed by the pictures of Shri Aurobindo and Mother smiling benevolently upon us. Mrs. Jayashree invites us inside and Srikanth joins her standing behind her coyly. Here is a eleven year old boy whose achievements in various fields like-- painting, playing carnatic and western music on key board, performing magic shows-- winning laurels and kudos from electronic media , is simply amazing. Behind this successful boy stands his mother who motivates and guides him. Jayashree works for Indian bank, Thousand Lights branch.

Srikanth, who is studying in DAV boys higher secondary school (7th std), started showing interest in drawing and painting while he was in studying in LKG itself. She says that this interest developed when he was at home due to a fracture and seeing the talent in him, goaded him and his school teacher Premalatha. His art teacher Latha Chavan also encouraged him to develop his talent further. This interest made him participate in drawing competitions, and in the children's painting competition held in Hyderabad, he bagged the gold medal for three consecutive years. His house is filled with medals, certificates and prizes which include items like Camera, Akai music system, BSA cycle and so on.

Srikanth also won the painting contest held at the National Level in the year 1999, and 2000 respectively. His paintings were brought out in greeting cards and nearly 1,26,000 cards were sold. The money raised from selling these cards were donated to the blind welfare. It is just not drawing and painting that he has mastered, he plays like a thorough professional on a key board too. We were amazed when he played a Kirthana 'Vathapi Ganapathi ' on his key board fluently. He says that he can play both carnatic and western music on his Key Board and that he is good in vocal too. His mother says that he learnt Key board carnatic music from Sri Krishnamurthy, a Veena vidhwan who lives close to his home. His uncle who listened to his rendering bought him a new Key Board from Singapore in appreciation. Srikanth has performed in children's club, birthday parties, and temples and he has appeared in Podhigai TV representing Nehru Children Cultural Group for Key Board rendition.

He has played in front of eminent musicians and has won their accolades. Last year on November 17th, he played carnatic music on his Key Board continuously for one hour in Talent Revealing Oppurtunity Programme and won standing ovation from the audience when he played in Mylapore Club. Many senior musicians are showing interest in taking him as a disciple which is a feather in his cap.

Srikanth's another favourite hobby is magic. His mother understood this interest of his, took him to Vadivel for coaching. Srikanth joined his workshop and learnt the naunces from Vadivel. Now he is appearing on stage, performing magic shows. Jayashree says that magic is an interesting matter and that one has to mesmerise the audience in a second by performing using finger tips. She personally goes to Bangalore and buys him the materials needed for his shows. Mohan, who produces vanishing Items helps them out too. Srikanth says that one of the most memorable incidents was when he performed magic shows in Maya Jaal in East Coast road in front of a large number of school students all over Chennai for 4 days consecutively and which was received very well by both elders and children alike. Sun TV telecasted a programme called ' Sadhanai Nayagan' featuring him in 15 minute show, for three weeks. He has also appeared in an English channel for a programme called 'Talents Corner'.

24 Hours a day is not enough for this busy bee whose ambition is to become an Aeronautic Engineer and at the same time pursue his interest in painting, music, key board and Magic shows. Jayashree watches her son in an exuberant manner as he reveals his dreams. Flowers are a favourite with the Mother. Let this bud blossom by Her grace and blessings, and spread its fragrance worldwide.
