United youth front

If you have any misgivings about the youth of today, it is time to change your opinion. That they too are socially-conscious, have dreams about future India and love their language - so says Kabilan Vairamuthu in a resounding voice.

Kabilan Vairamuthu, a final-year IT student from S R M Engineering College, is running a movement called 'Samudaya Sevagar Sangam' along with nearly 500 college students in an unobtrusive manner.

"The youth of India have come together only twice. The first was during the freedom struggle and the second was during the rise of the Dravidian movement. The thought of uniting the youth of free India impelled us to start this third movement," declares Kabilan.

During the first movement, the youth were united under freedom, in the second under equality and now the third movement has been started to unite them under the umbrella of brotherhood. Initially, it was started with 10 students from the school. And after they finished their schooling and joined colleges, the number rose to 500. The students belong to different colleges.

Their aim is to let people know about the movement through their principles and not by projecting an individual... this is the reason why there is no leader for this movement!

Their main focus is to bring about awareness among the youth, to exhibit their talents which would be of use to society. Apart from this, it is a rule that the members avoid smoking and drinking.

The members help orphanages and have commenced a programme known as 'Pidi Arisi Thittam'. Through this, every student is asked to keep a 2 kg tin in his home and drop a handful of rice in the tin before food is cooked at home. The rice thus collected is donated to orphanages.

On December 19, 2002, the sangam organised a function through which it distributed aid to various people.

The organisation is preparing a white banner for world peace. Students from 100 colleges will be signing on the banner. "To extend a hand to world peace and lend a voice for it is the duty of every social movement," says Kabilan.

The son of Tamil Nadu's leading poet, Padmashree Kaviperarasu Vairamuthy, it would be an understatement to say that Kabilan also writes poetry because he has already published two anthologies.

The first collection of his poems was called, 'Ulagam Yavaiyum', released by late writer Savi, and his second one was 'Endran Kavignan', released by his mother Ponmani Vairamuthu and received by Srinidhi Karthik Chidhambaram.

He has expressed his thoughts and feelings on the daily scenes he is exposed to in this anthology. The train he travels by daily, the railway station, classrooms, students and college love are the main topics that he has written about.

'Patratriru' which means 'be without attachmant' is his favourite philosophy. When it comes to his father's poem, it is his 'Valarsidhai matram' which he admires. "I love his works... 'Valarsidhai matram' is one which touched me most...In this, he talks about his dual personality, one who is a pacifist and the other who rises against the evils in society...The substance of the poem is that the second personality is getting prepared to come out. The strength of the poem is what attracted me," says the proud son of an illustrious father.

The movement which has starte..... - Satishres, Belgaum, 2/6/2004

The mental stress that is faced by the students, who after their school education in Tamil medium find it difficult to study in English medium at the college level, is expressed beautifully by Kabilan in the poem 'Tamizh Medium' from 'Enran Kavignan'.

Kabilan reveals that right from childhood, he has been interested only in writing in general and not in writing lyrics for films. His ambition has always been to start a massive movement for the benefit of society.

"This third united youth front should happen throughout Tamil Nadu. This aim can be reached in our generation or by the next one...The seed has been sowed by us...it will blossom into flowers and it is our dream to see the fruits...Time alone can tell us the answer!" says Kabilan, swelling with hope.
