Akhila Srinivasan is Dutch Hony Consul
The Royal Netherlands Embassy and Consulates General has announced the appointment of Akhila Srinivasan, managing director of Shriram Life Insurance, to the post of Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Eric F Ch Niehe, Ambassador of Netherlands, was present in Chennai to felicitate her on this prestigious occasion.
He made the formal announcement to the Government of Tamil Nadu and met the senior officials of the government.
In this capacity, Akhila will provide consular services to Dutch citizens and residents visiting India and assist the embassy in promoting goodwill and strengthening the economical relations between the two countries. She will help in the processing and smoothening of visa applications and act as a point of contact for the Embassy and Ministry of foreign affairs. Creating awareness of the Dutch culture, art and heritage in India will also be a priority area on her agenda.
She has been considered as an ideal candidate on account of her knowledge of the business community in Chennai owing to her vast experience with the leading financial conglomerate of India. At the investiture ceremony, Akhila said, "It is a matter of deep pride and honour for me as I take on this new role. As we move towards a globalised economy and global cultures, relationships with countries across the world become extremely important. We hope to augment our relationship with the Netherlands in all spheres of business and economy, education, science, technology and innovation and arts and culture."

Akhila Srinivasan, 44, is the managing director of Shriram Life Insurance, a part of the Rs 6,000 crore Shriram Group. Akhila is among the key board-level executives of Shriram Group and the only female MD in the group. She is also among the very few women executives in the financial services sector.
She joined the Shriram Group in 1986 as a management trainee. During her 19-year tenure with the company, Akhila has travelled extensively throughout the length and breadth of India, motivating individuals and building a very effective and empowered team. She has been instrumental in developing a wide distribution network and human infrastructure for the company. In 2000, she was managing director of Shriram Investments until 2005, when she took on the role of MD of Shriram Life Insurance.
