On the occasion of its 40th convocation, Madurai Kamaraj University has conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in recognition of his efforts for the development of Tamil Nadu, its language and people.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, P Maruthamuthu, read out the citation and conferred the degree in the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor of the university Surjit Singh Barnala and state Higher Education Minister K
Ponmudi.
The citation mentioned various welfare schemes undertaken by Karunanidhi's government, including introduction of Tamil as the language of the High Court.
It also listed his literary works, including 'Nenjukku Neethi', 'Kuraloviam', 'Silappathikaram Nataka Kappiyam', 'Sangathamizh' and
'Tholkaappiyapoonga'.
'The D Litt degree will add honour to the honourable person,' the citation said. (Agencies)
