'For twenty rupees you can save a life', says one notice. The next time you want to save a life, reach out for your wallet, goes another. Saving a life is not an expensive affair, that's what the Cancer Institute intends to prove. “We aim to collect Rs 20 crore by June 2004. We hope to do this by selling coupons priced at Rs 20 each,” Dr Shanta, Chairperson of the Cancer Institute, said. Sixty per cent of patients at the institute are given free treatment. The Institute incurs an expenditure of Rs 20 crore every year, she added. The Institute has come out with five commercials featuring Kamal Haasan, where he requests the public to donate Rs 20 for a noble cause and urges smokers to quit the habit. The commercials will soon be aired on various channels.
AVM Saravanan, filmmaker, said school children too should be involved in the scheme and added that children in the AVM group of schools could be roped in to sell the coupons. N Ram, Editor, Frontline, said “the Institute opens its doors wide without being intimidated by the scale of demand.” The first coupon was given to Kodandarama Setty, Chairman, Viveks Limited. The coupons will be available at the showrooms of Viveks across Tamil Nadu and at Foodworld outlets.
