Take a look at the showroom from the road and even an adult will be drawn into the shop for the tantalising window display comprises row upon row of soft toys, of all sizes and shapes. Walk into the showroom and a burst of colour meets the eye. Spread over a 100 sq ft area on the first floor of Sagarika Towers, the Archies Gallery that opened on December 18 on Kasturibai Nagar 3rd Cross Street offers a pleasurable shopping experience. Want a gift? The problem is yours, trying to decide what you want to buy. The range on offer varies from Christmas decorations aplenty - wreaths, bells and Christmas trees - to watches, pen sets, figurines, bags, expensive crystal and gold plated pen stands, diaries and loads and loads of soft toys. Not to mention the large array of greeting cards. You name the occasion, and they have the card! This is Archies' third such gallery in the city, the first was opened in Nungambakkam and the next in Anna Nagar. Their plan is to have five such showrooms in Chennai. And the next may come up in Vadapalani and the other in Tambaram, says E Mahadevan, Manager, Administration. What about other areas? There are logistical problems to be looked at. For instance, business-wise north Chennai might be a good option but finding place for parking might be a problem, he says. In Adyar too, the street opposite the gallery is convenient for customers to park their vehicles. Well, the first day has been hectic as can be seen from the faces of the staff. Mahadevan takes a break to give an instruction, offer sweets to the latest entrant or clarify a doubt. The response has been good from the morning, he says. Of course there was a lull in the afternoon, but it picked up again by evening. Gifts for every 25th customer and a 15 per cent discount on purchases for the first three days were some of the inaugural offers thrown in. And for Christmas and New Year, Archies Gallery has a common scheme on the lines of 'Dress in blue', win a surprise gift! Tempting indeed! Six staff members will attend to the customers. The number is enough for a shop this size, says Mahadevan. 'Cleanliness is the watchword at Archies' and that is taken very seriously. On the 'cards for a cause' such as HelpAge India and Cry, he says there is great demand for them. Corporates are the major clients, with Infosys, Bangalore ordering over a lakh each year. Fenner India and L&T are among the other major buyers. What better way to celebrate the New Year than with a thought of the needy? So do your bit, buy these cards and promote a good cause.
