A cause for cheer!

There was a nip in the air. A bright morning, the first day of 2003! As the sound of the breaking waves mingled with that of the enthusiastic crowds at Elliots Beach, as the faithful assembled at the Velankanni church for the morning mass, a group caught the attention of those gathered.

Brisk activity was to be seen. The occasion: The 'Walk for a Cause', organised by Chennaionline to create awareness about HelpAge India, the premier organisation working for the cause and care of disadvantaged people.

Gracing the occasion with his presence was young actor Sibiraj, son of Sathyaraj, who was enthusiastic about the cause right from when the idea was broached to him.

L Ravichandran, CEO and founder of Chennaionline, greeted those assembled and said the organisation was glad to be able to start off the New Year for a noble cause.

S S Dass of HelpAge India, who spoke next, explained their various projects their organisation was undertaking, of their mission to work for the cause and care of disadvantaged aged persons and improve their quality of life.

All along the two km stretch down Beach Road, past the Besant Nagar Bus Terminus, the CPWD Quarters, Kalakshetra Colony and till the finishing point near Ashtalakshmi Temple, the walkers, carrying banners and placards, were greeted by the enthusiastic people on their way to the temples and churches on New Year's day.

"Very well organised. I am proud to take part in the walk organised for a noble cause," was what Sibiraj had to say at the end.

And this was echoed by the participants. "A different New Year experience", "A very new beginning for a New Year," was what some of the others had to say.

Sharing in the spirit of the occasion was Allianz Bajaj, who had put up their stall at the starting and finishing points besides providing refreshments to the walkers.
