Dining out in Adyar

Well, we have run through a stretch of Adyar, and now it’s time to relax. And if you’re looking for an evening out with the family, could there be a better place than Besant Nagar? The area boasts of a large number of restaurants with cuisines ranging from the south Indian to the continental, so much so that making a choice is often tough. Here we feature a few of the restaurants.

Eden

Enter a place where the food served is delicious and sumptuous and where continental and south Indian cuisines happen to be the fares of the day. The name is definitely bound to bowl you over. The place, like the legendary Garden of Eden, is one you won’t want to miss. In spite of numerous eateries and restaurants mushrooming around Besant Nagar the compact restaurant has managed to survive and is still noted for serving mouth watering creations. The comfortable and soothing atmosphere inside the restaurant also add to its charm.

The creators of this popular eatery, Aparna, Venkatesh and Subhadra, were former students of the Institute of Hotel Management, Chennai. They decided to start a restaurant when they passed out of college. Moreover as all of them as felt mutually passionate about food the idea of setting up a restaurant was welcomed. Thus Eden was born 11 years ago. Eden is one of the oldest restaurants in Besant Nagar. It serves continental, Indian and South Indian food, with continental being its main specialty. Continental food includes Italian, French, English and the Mediterranean cuisine.

Eden is also a reasonably priced restaurant with prices ranging from Rs 250 for a meal for two (lunch). The main purpose behind the creation of the restaurant was to bring pure vegetarian continental food within the reach of the common man. The 100 per cent vegetarian tag the restaurant provides and the rapport the restaurant has with all its customers is what keeps the visitors coming back to Eden. “There is more of personal management than hotel management at Eden,” says Venkatesh the owner. This creates customer loyalty and also helps maintain our revenues, he adds.

This small 48-seater restaurant also takes catering orders for weddings and various other occasions. Advance booking of two weeks in usually needed for taking the orders. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Restaurant timings are: 12.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. for lunch and 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. for dinner. The restaurant can be visited at:

Sage and Onion

Sage and Onion, a cozy restaurant, was started by Srinivasan and Rajeev Paul in Besant Nagar on April 26, 2000. Paul completed his catering course from the Institute Of Hotel Management, Calcutta. He specialises in baking and making confectioneries. Cake Walk was his first baby, followed by Sage and Onion and Clay Oven.

There is an interesting story behind the unusual name. Sage in actuality is an Italian herb very essential in cooking of Italian and continental food and Onion is an ingredient without which no dish is complete. In order to highlight the importance of this, the restaurant has been innovatively named Sage and Onion.

Sage and Onion offers Italian, continental, and north Indian food. Its specialty however is continental food. The restaurant is a 40 seater and has an aura of warmth as the colour scheme suggests. The restaurant caters to the upper middle class. The rates are good value for the cuisine served as most of the herbs used in the preparation of the fare are dried and imported and this is the secret behind the mouth-watering dishes served. The restaurant also has a take away.

Bookings for outdoor catering are taken for all kinds of occasions. Outdoor catering is done for a gathering of around 50-200 people. They are organised mainly for birthdays, conferences, official functions, inaugurations and family get-togethers. No reservation is necessary on weekdays but bookings become essential during the weekends, as the restaurant gets quite busy.

The restaurant serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. It is open on all seven days of the week. Timings are between 12 p.m. to 2.45 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Steaks and lasagnas are the customers’ favorites dishes.
