Forever Nalli

Nalli, a name synonymous with Madras nee Chennai. Traditional yet trendy, popular to the young and old alike and good service -- these are just some of the superlatives that are associated over the years with the institution called Nalli.

In that they have been able to carry the people with them lies their success story. And continuing the tradition is Mr Kuppuswamy, great grandson of the founder Nalli Chinnasamy Chettiar. He manages the fifth showroom of his father, N R Gopalasamy, in Adyar.

The response to the showroom, which opened on June 16, has been good. The five months have seen good sales and a discount sale for Deepavali did the trick. Daily sales average between Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 and touched Rs 2-3 lakh during the festival season. Not bad going at all, says Kuppusamy.

Silk sarees ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 are on display at the small yet well arranged showroom. Adding to the collection are printed silks and cotton saris and salwar suits to fit any budget.

Located in a posh area, the lower ranges don't sell, the salespersons say. The cotton saree range therefore starts from around Rs 180 onwards. It was obviously a question of trial and learning, finding out what sells and getting in more according to tastes and requests. And that seems to be where Adyar Nalli is scoring.

Unheard of these days, they have begun a home service aimed at the old and the frail who are unable to make it to the shop but would still like to have a say in choosing their sarees. Again, a reflection of the importance they place on customers.

The idea came from customers who called asking if such a thing was possible, says Kuppusamy, adding that they just revived a practice that had been in vogue in the main showroom over ten years ago. Then, as the shop grew and volumes skyrocketed it had become virtually impossible to carry on with the scheme. Today, Kuppusamy has one person dedicated for the job.

And those who have visited the showroom are all praise. "We no longer have to go all the way to T Nagar. It's practically at our doorstep and we save on time too."

An attractive feature at the outlet is the recently started silk saree chit scheme. Contribute Rs 100 a month for 12 months and at the end, each member can purchase goods worth Rs 1,320. And the deal is not restricted to silk sarees.

In the 15 days since the scheme was launched, nearly 800 persons had signed for it, Kuppusamy said. That figures speak volumes about the popularity of the scheme.

Well, there is more from the Nalli stable. A separate salwar section upstairs, to be ready in 10 days' time, will give more room for adding on to the saree collection, says Kuppusamy. And six months down the line, another showroom a little down the road. Well, Adyarites are in for a treat.
