Racing past

We have seen some of the new and the hep in Adyar, now let us take a trip down the road to take a look at the old, institutions that have become synonymous with the area, places that do the city proud. A brief record of some of them.

On the road to Guindy are the new and old wings of the renowned Cancer Institute with many first to its credit.
The institution, headed by Dr Shantha, has been doing yeomen service to those afflicted by the terminal illness. Then there is the residential Indian Institute of Technology, one of India's premier institutions of engineering. The 628-acre beautiful campus with its spacious gardens and parks was established in 1961 and the credit for ensuring its sylvan surroundings goes to its first director Dr B B Sengupta.

Behind the IIT is the impressive Central Institute of Technology, with its vocation-oriented training institutes varying from printing to catering. It houses the country's first Regional School of Printing. The Central Leather Research Institute, opposite the IIT, is one of India's finest research institutions. It owes its international fame to stalwarts like Dr B M Das and later Dr Nayuduamma.

Guindy also boasts of possibly the world's only game reserve within a city, now a National Park which is one of the last natural grazing grounds of the black buck. The 680 acres has about 125 species of trees and other flora, over 140 species of birds and large herds of spotted deer. When the then Governor's mansion became the Raj Bhavan with Independence, 1000 acres were handed over to the government. It was at the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's instance that a Children's Park was developed in a corner of the forest. Guindy Park also boasts of a unique snake park and reptilium, founded in the early 1970s by Romulus Whitaker.

Near the Park are also the Rajaji Memorial and the Gandhi Mandapam. These along with the Raj Bhavan were once part of the enormous Governor's Estate. Now it is the turn of some of the finest educational centers in the country. Among these is the College of Engineering, the oldest outside Europe, with several firsts to its credit.

The 1980s saw the addition of the country's fifth B M Birla Planetarium which is part of the bigger attraction, the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre. Here, science and technology have been simplified to create popular interest and awareness.

Not to be forgotten is the King Institute of Preventive Medicine, set up in 1905 to supply vaccine lymph. And not far from it, the glorious complex for the 'Sport of Kings' - the racecourse. The first race meet in the country was held around 1780 on the Island Grounds before the sport moved to Guindy. As we race past the old, it is time to take a break till we meet again next week. Till then…
