Bedroom and dining sets, TV trolleys and wall units, leather couches and children's bedroom sets take up the two floors of the shop. "The company has sent its own trained staff to do up the shop," says M Varadhrajan of Raj Agencies, who is in charge of the shop.
The furniture, imported from Thailand, is made of top grade raw materials, comprehensively designed and user friendly. As for the light colours in the leather couch range and how it would suit our conditions, Varadharajan said "they are quite popular. They are easy to maintain and any dirt can be wiped off with a damp cloth or a soap solution." But of course, those opting for these colours are those who mostly those who know they can maintain it well, he adds.
The shop is right now open all through the week from 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. Varadharajan is assisted by his wife Shashikala in running the shop. She adds her aesthetic touch, seeing to the display of the items, and is there in the mornings attending to the details.

Kasturba Nagar 2nd Main Road, as I said earlier, is the happening place. Gracing the area with their presence are many new entrants, and one such is Sun Imported Furniture. Promoted by the Mumbai-based Regency Group, the shop brings you internationally designed, elegant furniture.
And what has been the response? Excellent, says he. "We have people coming in from as far away as Anna Nagar and Tambaram. Velachery, where there are quite a few residential complexes coming up, is another place from where customers have come to us."
Sun's bedroom sets come in a variety of models such as Millennium, Zenith, Grace, Panorama, Zen, Alto and Matrix, with fixtures and turning mirrors with lights. They are available in Steam Beech, Hard Maple, Sycamore, Wenge and Mahogany. The Millennium is a seven foot high walk-in wardrobe with sliding doors and a king size cot (6-1/2 by 6 ft). As for prices, the bedroom sets range from Rs 42,000 to Rs 1.80 lakh, the TV trolley and wall unit from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, Dining sets (glass topped and wooden) from Rs 10,000 to Rs 45,000, PU couches from Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000, leather couches Rs 1 lakh and the children's sets from Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000.
For the wholesale distributor of plywood for the past two decades, it has not been a paradigm shift. Feeling the need for diversification, Varadharajan decided to try his hand when he heard that the Regency Group wanted to set up a showroom in Chennai. And what better location than upmarket Adyar? "It has been a hectic two months, a period of learning," says he, obviously enjoying the experience.
