Indian ARC rally raring to go
The day is here: August 21, when the bizarre rally of Indian autorickshaws will be flagged off from
Chennai.
The flagging off is to be held at Besant Nagar beach at 11.15 a.m., says Aravind Kumar, the lead organiser of the event.
Ramkumar, son of late actor Sivaji Ganesan and a film producer in his own right, (he was the producer for the recent successful blockbuster Chandramukhi), will flag off the rally.
The rally is set to cover 1,000 km (590 miles) "through the most scenic roads of south India in a three-wheel, motorised vehicle, the
autorickshaw".
There are 16 participating teams with names like: Armageddon, Tamil Devils, Curry in a Hurry, The Ring of Fire!, Curry on Regardless, Harddrivers, Riksa Miska, Extreme Trifle, Team Cams, Overdrive, Maiden Voyager and Pukka Tuk
Tuk.
According to Aravind 13 of the teams are already in Chennai, raring to go.
The lead organiser, who loves adventure sports, is surprised that a lot of the rallyists are not from Chennai. And though the Indian media has been of great help in disseminating info on the rally, there are not many participants from anywhere else in India.
Could it be the steep price of the rally, we wonder. But Aravind justiifes the price as what the rallyists are being charged for are not just the autos and the rally. There is going to be an ambulance following the rallyists along with security for the participants, explains
Aravind.
Though the response from abroad has been amazing, he would like Indians to help in whatever way they can to make the rally a big success and give a boost to adventure sports in the country.
