Its
midnight for us, the city is fast asleep but the market is buzzing
with activities. It is the Koyambedu market for vegetables, fruits
and flowers. It was indeed a challenging task to accept the dare
posed to me by my friend, a night at the Koyambedu market!
Chennaites will be familiar about the largest wholesale market,
Koyambedu. An adventure trip which taught lessons of business by the
masses. Try visiting the market for their early morning activities
apart from the usual purchase routine!
The early hours of the morning when the activity in this market is
at its peak, is a sight must see for a person to understand the
complex yet organized functioning of the Koyambedu market. The
freshness and variety of the fruits, vegetables and flowers being
sold here has no par else where in the city. This market has
transformed from what was intended to be a central support to street
hawkers to a hub that supplies to other retail supermarkets.
Trucks from villages all over Tamilnadu and even Karnataka and
Andhra Pradesh bring in the “pride” of the market. Puzzled what the
pride could be? It is that perishable asset which the market boasts
of. Local farmers from across South India start work early midnight
with their farm fresh vegetables, load it into their often rented
trucks to deliver the goods at the stipulated time to their loyal
wholesalers. Economies of scale indeed at the grass root level.
There’s neither dawn nor dusk for this part of the town. Just when
we think the sun has set after a tiring day, life begins in this
market and each day brings a ray of hope for this buzzing market.
The vibrancy and efficient quality of products along with the
cutting cost has brought this market to fame. Despite the rise of
many alternatives and cut throat competition from Reliance fresh,
Pazhamudir nilayam etc, the Koyambedu market still remains a
favorite.
With vendors originally from all over South India, this is a hub for
business and it’s a fascinating sight. In deed it is exciting to
experience the vendors setting their stock aside and gearing up for
a day of fruitful trade and business.
The cycle is all about to close when the vegetables from here
reaches the platter. Not studied, not organized, yet happening. This
is the Koyambedu market, live and rocking. All ready to beat the
fierce threats with the not so highly motivated vendors.
