Range
of buses of different class to the same destination! White board,
yellow board, deluxe, automatic doors and then joins the hero, our
a.c bus liners. People glare at these luxury air conditioned buses
when they pass across them. From electronic ticketing to digital
display of destinations on the flash screen, from luxury cushion
seats to perfectly uniformed drivers and conductors, these buses
simple glorify Chennai roads.
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (formerly
known as Pallavan Transport Corporation Ltd.) is the agency that
operates the public transport bus service in Chennai An image boost
for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) came with the
introduction of 10 air-conditioned buses in September 2007 .
Connecting one end of the city to other, the journey seems half as
hectic in this Volvo bus when compared to its contemporaries. People
outside Chennai dread to step into the buses because of the crowd,
but hats off the state transport corporation which has introduced
such a comfort mode for commutation.
During peak hours, most of city’s bus commuters
do not prefer these buses because of the whooping fare charged.
Reason provided by the government is justified yet there are very
few people who travel by this bus on a daily basis. Mostly it is
families with school going kids during week ends for a joy ride
around the city who take this mode.
If there is one section of the society who own a
car or two wheeler, and do not prefer any kind of public transport,
the other section cannot afford to pay for luxury.
Will there be any takers for luxury in this town?
Or is it just another attempt by the government to lure public to
government transport. Whatever be the condition the air conditioned
buses in Chennai roads add feather to the city’s cap and make us one
among the most organized metros in the country. Chennai might not be
the first in the country to start a trend but it definitely doesn’t
trail among the last few cities to adapt to changes.
