Now, for some history basics! The historical roots of Spencer Plaza goes back to British Raj, when in the year 1863-1864, the first Departmental store in the Indian subcontinent (comprising India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), established by Charles Durant and J. W. Spencer. After few years, Eugene Oakshott shifted the departmental store to a new building, which was an example of Indian Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The building was designed by W. N. Pogson. In the year 1983, the original building was destroyed in a fire. The present Spencer Plaza was constructed on the same site Spencer is made up of a lot of small shops rather than the commercial type shop. There are a few large shops in Spencer like Landmark, Westside and Pantaloon, Titan showroom etc. but the majority is small shops. The list accommodates Chat shops, Silver stores, Foot wear and on & on...

As for goods, you wish and that is available. Health and Glow for beauty products for both men and women. Leather stores, Pashmina shawls, Gizmo goods all are here. Unlike other malls, bargaining can be at its peak here. No Brand; high bargain, that should be your mantra.

If you like crowd then visit Spencer plaza during the week end and you will love the energy of chennaiites all around. Try out the lemon soda with a huge shopping bag on your shoulder. The taste of both should not be missed!
