Novartis India, in association with various medical professionals in
the city, organised a public awareness program on `Safety of Wearing
Helmet' on Sunday at the Natesan Park, T Nagar.
K Ganapathy, a neurosurgeon with Apollo Hospitals, recalled how he
had lost two brothers as they were not wearing helmet while riding
two-wheelers. "In India, we do all kind of advanced surgeries and
other medical treatments. But still we are not able to implement a
simple rule," said Dr Ganapathy. "India is the world leader in two
wheeler accidents and Tamil Nadu tops the list," he added.
Ramachandran, an engineering consultant, had lost
his brother on the same day last year due to two-wheeler accident as
he was not wearing a helmet. "We wanted to remember him by doing
something for the benefit of the public," says Ramachandran, who
mooted this unique way to create awareness.
The event saw the voluntary participation of many medical and other
professionals. "Our aim is to create public awareness about a simple
task that will save the life of many," said Dr R Padmavati, a
psychiatrist.
Most of the participants narrated a tragic incident caused by not
wearing a helmet. Indeed, none of them were angry with the fate they
endured, but their anguish over this problem was evidently visible
on their face.
Carrying interesting placards with tags like `Wear a helmet, your
family needs you', `Helmets are not meant for petrol tanks', Two
wheeler is meant for two' etc., they also distributed leaflets to
two-wheeler riders.
The campaign was a sight which really made people talk about safety
of wearing helmets at least in the vicinity of Natesan park . Kudos
to the team which organized the campaign!
