A Day @ Connemara

A vailability of virtual library has to a large extent decreased the visitors to the public library of the city. With good infrastructure and an extensive collection of books, Connemara Public library in Egmore is perhaps the best place to find book worm's engrossed in deep mind conversation with their books. Observing the people in the library of this stature is an experience by itself.

People of all ages visit this library. More often you will find an middle age man having more than ten books piled up in front him and typically wearing his spectacles in his nose and digging for information in the books from the political science or literature section. When asked one gentle man of the same age about how he resorts to library and books for his information needs he said, "Though websites give almost everything, literature from books are the best sources of information. I am a lecturer in Government College and I have to be accurate about what I teach my students. That's the reason why I frequent this place at least once a week."

The most commonly seen scene would be this: Young girls walking from one corner to the other corner in search of the right rack. Even if the arrangement order is clearly mentioned, they find it so difficult to locate a book. And making notes is like something which they can not dream of. All what you can see is them marking few pages, heading towards the photocopy place and waiting to get their info in hand.

There are computers placed in the entrance of every hall and it has this extensive search engine which helps one locate a particular book in a section.

With air conditioned study area one of the most common sights would be to see a few dosing off with the pen in their ears. This Library has a Hall of periodicals, reference room, IAS study centre, books in Indian Languages and a Braille Library. The IAS section is where you always find more number of people.

Connemara Public Library being one of the 4 National depository libraries which receive a copy of all books, news papers and periodicals published in India free of cost. People like Sudha, an homemaker who make it a point to visit this place at least once a month.

Getting membership in this library is a cake walk. A photocopy of your ration card and nominal fee and you can borrow all books except the books from reference section.
