The
KM Conservatory of Music, an institution for the training of
musicians for professional careers in the field is coming up in
Chennai. In collaboration with Audio Media Foundation, an Apple
Authorised Training Centre, this Institute is a brainchild of the
music wizard A R Rahman. This will open in June this year. It will
concentrate on instrumental and vocal music, both Indian and
western, and, of course music technology. Courses will be in music
technology, voice, strings and keyboards.
Rahman said that Initially, Preparatory, Foundation and Diploma
courses will be offered. Any student will be able to perfect his or
her skills. Knowledge in music technology is a must in today's
musical world, whether in Indian or Western music.
Those students who complete the music technology course will be
equipped to handle advanced studio equipment, with long term
professional prospects.
One
hundred and fifty students will be admitted every year. There will
be no age limit. Even a sixty-year-old will be able to join the
course. Syllabus will be formed in consultation with the experts in
every field of music. For those who have the talent, but not the
resources, Rahman's Foundation would offer scholarships. Foe him,
giving is more important than taking, he said.
A
permanent structure in a sprawling three acre area in the suburbs of
Chennai will be the location. Till its construction is over, i.e, in
a couple of years, the Conservatory will function from three
different locations. Eventually, Rahman wants it to be a residential
College. He will be the Principal. Leading performing artists of
various streams of music like Carnatic, Hindustani and Western music
will be in the Advisory Board.
KM will help evolve a culture, in which muasic can
be taken seriously as a potential profession. It will eventually
gain the Status of a deemed university.
