I
dare, therefore I am. These are the catch words Kiren Bedi, the
first woman IPS officer of the country gave to women. And she was
rightly presented the ‘Award of Excellence’ by the FICCI Ladies
Organisation (FLO) in Chennai on Saturday. The ‘Champion of
Humanity’ awards were conferred on Shantha Sinha, chairperson,
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and Shanthi
Ranganathan, chairperson, T.T. Ranganathan Clinical Research
Foundation. Mallika Srinivasan, Director, TAFE Limited, was honoured
with the ‘Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur’ award. The FLO celebrated
the International Women’s Day this way.
“Woman
is all about humanity and hence women’s day is humanity day”, said
Dr. Kiran Bedi. She started her speech censured the special edition
of a weekly magazine (March 10) and its conclave for not publishing
a single article regarding women’s day or women achievers. “It is
dangerous to leave everything to the men,” she warned. A business
plan to include women in leadership positions is the need of the
hour as women are more responsible than men, she said. It is time
women stopped being a minority and should share equal status with
men.
She stressed the need for women network in work places and said that
the Total Quality Management (TQM) of every corporate house should
concentrate on women elevation.
Creation
of day-care industry is another important area to be initiated.
“Day-care facilities in corporate are missing in the country. Women
drivers and trained and equipped women securities should be
employed”, she said.
Dr. Shantha Sinha said that children’s courage in refusing to go to
work, ‘gives us strength’. We must support the children who say that
they don’t want to go to work, she added.
Dr. Shanthi Ranganathan said that more than the alcohol and drug
addicts, their family members are affected. “They are subjected to
emotional trauma and they need a lot of compassion”, she said. She
also explained the various
programmes conducted by T.T. Ranganathan Clinical Research
Foundation exclusively for the family members of the addicts.
According to Mallika Srinivasan, women do hold high positions in
almost all fields including politics and academics. “Women are
aspiring to climb the corporate ladders, which offer them a sense of
fulfilment.” The environment in India is more conducive, as they can
achieve, without losing their core values, she said.
Akhila Srinivasan, Chairperson, FICCI Ladies Organisation and Latha
Rajan, Vice-Chairperson, FICCI Ladies Organisation were also present
at the award function.
