M.S.Subbulakshmi was a legend, is a legend and will perhaps, always be a legend. Swararchana, the first ever DVD on the life of MS Subbulakshmi was released today by Saregama India Ltd. The video revolves around her life, her childhood, and her umpteen practice sessions with her brother, accompanied by comments from eminent musicians and rare clippings of her life.
There is so much one doesn't know about MS, and this video documentary tells all. Speaking at the occasion was Mr. Ashok Krishnan of Saregama. "The idea of making a documentary on MS Subbulakshmi was conceived by Saregama 3 to 4 years back. It was our way of paying tribute to this legendary singer. The DVD reveals her life, giving details about events people will definitely not know. This documentary is definitely a collector's item."
Also present during the launch function were Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman, the noted mrudangam player, Mr. N. Ram, Editor-in-chief of The Hindu, Mr. Atmanathan and playback singers Tippu and Harini.
The dignitaries were all praise for MS. According to Sri Sivaraman, "A great person who is bestowed with cosmic energy- that was MS Subbulakshmi! This documentary will inculcate more interest in the younger generation and her music will help them move the world towards bliss and tranquility. She was the finest icon and a trendsetter in music and rasikas."
Mr. N. Ram enlightened the crowd about his experiences with MS, her role in the freedom struggle along with her husband, and her public spirit and contributions to society. "Whenever MS Subbulakshmi and her husband found a good cause, they stayed with it till the end."
Genius, idol, divine, legend, goddess, nightingale - every word epitomises MS Subbulakshmi. With her first ever concert at the age of 10 years; she climbed up the rungs of success slowly and gradually. And this initiative taken by Saregama to launch her documentary on the occasion of her 92nd birthday is indeed the best tribute that could be paid to her!
