Healthy competition is always propagated by older generations, but students of the city colleges seem to have coined a new terminology called healthy rivalry amongst each other. Very often we have heard college students speaking with a rage about another college for various reasons. Movie Kadhal Desam rightly captures the spirit of college rivalry due to sports in the initial few scenes. So asking few students belonging to various city colleges about whom they consider is their rival college, revealed stunning replies.
Predominant reason for such inter college rivalry rests with three; Sports, culturals and N.C.C. Every student who wants to get a hang of real college life involves in at least one of the above mentioned fields. This paves a way for them to meet students of various other institutions and the responsibility of flying the college's flag high rests on the students shoulder.
Gayathri an ex- student of Ethiraj College for Women and presently studying at Madras Christian college says, "When I was in Ethi, our main competitor when culturals where considered was Stella Maris College and M.O.P Vaishnav for Women. We were always curious about their performance and we tracked their victory chart closely."
There are few colleges known for their rivalry. Like the Loyola College and Pachiyappas College feud which runs for more than a decade now. Of late students consider their equals in terms of culturals and sports their rival (read competitors). More often Arts and Science College go by the three criteria and the slab for rivalry is different when engineering colleges are considered. "We don't have as much time as arts colleges for culturals and our rivalry is restricted with infra structure and placements. We in S.R.M College mostly consider Sri Venkateshwara College of engineering as our rival" says Karthik.
All this rivalry does not deter the sportive spirit of the students! End of the day be it culturals or sports, it is a platform to mingle with others and develop a good social circuit. And when speaking about healthy rivalry, missing out on the sibling relationship which a women's college share with a men's college would be unfair! "Loyola, Stella bondings, M.C.C (co-ed college) and W.C.C affinity are also remarkable" says Srikanth an ex- student of Loyola.
