A Big Yes for Co-ed!

Crucial time of the year for admission is in! When students and parents think about the various colleges and courses available, let's get the view of few students and parents about their stand on co-education colleges and gender specific colleges. With Chennai having many women's colleges and few men's college turning co-ed one after another, its important to understand if students/ parents still have any reservations on the type of college based on this criteria - whether they consider this as an issue or if it's a trivial issue of no concern at all.

There was a period when girls never went to college slowly they stepped into colleges for higher education but only to women's college, if this is the reason for setting up specific women's college, I guess the reason for age old Pachyippas and Loyola were started as boys college as that period only boys used to step into higher education.

"I study in a women's college, not because only girls go here and there is an assumed level of security from eve teasing, but for the sole reason for me to choose this college a year ago was was the course which is offered" divulges a student of journalism from M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women.

"It is so much fun to mingle with girls. They are our friends and we don't consider them any different. To decide based on this criteria is simple foolish" says Vivek, who has applied for admission in Loyola college.

"Come on, which era we exist in, I do not think people still decide based on this criterion; There is much more to ponder upon; like the infrastructure, campus placements, distance and many more. If I put my daughter in a women's college just for the sake of protection from her mingling with other sex, then that would be the worst mistake done by me as a parent. If not in college then when will she face the world" emphatically says Chandersekar, whose daughter is due her admission in a reputed college.

So do we come to decision that deciding to join a college is not based on the gender of the students admitted? This might take few more years or close to less than a decade as people somewhere in their minds have that secure feeling about their wards studying in gender specific colleges. If parents of guys feel that their son will not fall into the trap of extra curricular activities like dating, romancing then fathers of daughters feel that eve teasing and ragging will be at a bay.
