Netru Indru Naalai

The star-spangled sky that cold December evening was matched on stage by the luminaries of the silver screen. As young and old thronged the IIT Stadium on Saturday eager to catch a glimpse of their favourite actors, actresses and singers, the atmosphere was charged with expectation. And Netru Indru Naalai, the evening of music and dance got up by The Banyan did not disappoint.

Compered by Suhasini, Revathy, Vijay Adhiraj and Srikanth, the show was a heart-stopper from the word go. It got off to a great start with artistes from Kerala performing the panchavadyam and chendamelam. As the giant screens at vantage points came to life, the crowds cheered in unison. Choreographer Kala’s troupe gave a graceful display, dancing flawlessly to a medley of tunes.

Then came the star attraction - Simran swirling sensuously to a medley of songs from Kamal Haasan's movies. Sporting a red bandanna, she had the audience spellbound with her 10-minute performance. On to clippings of various personalities, including superstar Rajinikant, praising Kamal and then the hero, clad in black, appeared on stage. Singing a song from Anbe Sivam. Repeated requests from the audience saw Kamal back on stage and rendering the Anbe Sivam song once again.

Back to a dance number, this time Shobana and her troupe with a fusion dance. Lithe and graceful as ever, she was a pleasure to watch. And then it was time for the musical evergreens - S P Balasubramaniam and K J Yesudas. A few songs from them and the biting cold was almost forgotten.

A spirited dance by Abbas and Ramya Krishnan had the audience tapping their foot too. The highlight of the evening was comedian Vivek who had the audience in splits with his ‘Karuppu thaan enakku pidicha…’. Adding to the spirit were songs rendered by Srinivas, Sujatha, Vijay Yesudas, Shailaja and Karthik.

A wonderful evening, time spent towards a noble cause, a feel good factor for those who have not yet got round to doing anything for the helpless and the needy! Vandana and Vaishnavi, it must have been tough going all these years. Here’s looking forward to easier times, helping hands and generous patrons.
